A new sweater with roses to match

May 08, 2025

In today's post, I share my new summer cotton minimalist sweater, the roses that match, and we're saying goodbye to the schnoodles! So much cuteness!

Say goodbye to the Schnoodles, Midnight and Bootsie! Tomorrow morning I take them to Pets In Need where they will get neutered and then go up for adoption. They've already had a lot of interest and don't think they'll last long. We've had so much fun with them and will miss them terribly but also very happy to be a part of their early journey to find their forever homes.

Midnight above is the boy and the athletic one in the duo. Midnight has a black coat with a silvery moonlit undercoat and is a very handsome fellow. He's very intelligent and loves to cuddle and play with his sweet sister below. He is also very close to being potty trained. He has more schnoo in him than oodle, and reminds us of Tramp from Lady and the Tramp. He's a darling boy. Bootsie is a bit smaller and fatter and more oodle than schnoo. She is a gorgeous girl as long as you think a prominent milk mustache--or perhaps goatee--is a good thing. We sure do! Along the way she has lost one of her snowy white boots, which makes her even more endearing. She loves to cuddle and play, is very polite and listens well, or at least as well as an 8 week old puppy can manage. Daily we see them each becoming more independent and confident. They both sleep through the night without crying, both have polite and gentle natures, and both are very alert and eager to listen and learn. I have a hunch that both of them will be very easy to train.

My prayer is that they find the right homes where they will become the treasured family members they deserve to be. Godspeed my darlings.

Now let's get on to this beautiful sweater! The pattern is an older one from Ankestrick and showcases minimal knitting design at its best. I've knitted the pattern a few times and reach for this when I'm looking for something simple with a teensy bit of detail. It is equally nice in wool or cotton. It's knit top down with a lovely contiguous sleeve design. There is a slip stitch detail down the front and sleeve with simple stockinette rolled edges.  I used one of my very favorite cotton yarns, Rowan Summerlite DK in Piglet. Simply love this for summer.

Attack!

Now how about these roses! This is the climbing rose that grows over an arch over the entry of our vegetable garden. When I sit on the patio this is the rose that I see front and center. Every year it has a magnificent first bloom, then several successive smaller blooms that become more and more pale. The bloom is cup shaped with a distinctive white and deep pink two tone. It is lightly fragrant and gorgeous in bud and when fully open. It has glossy foliage and is disease free in our garden.  It has two names, Eden and Pierre de Ronsard. This is our first rose to bloom and these blooms have staying power! It is our favorite rose in the garden and when it's in bloom we are compelled to sit on the patio and gaze at it; life slows down and with the two little pups to enjoy, we've had a perfectly wonderful spring.

In January my son and husband had to replace both of the rose arches in the vegetable garden, both the Eden above and also the First Prize on the left in the photo below. We ordered the arches from Wayfair and we're so happy with them. They are painted wood and came ready to put together, says me who had nothing to do with it except picking it out. In order to remove the old arches and install the new ones we had to severely prune back the roses and bend them way over, but they took that in stride and are NO worse for that! Yay!
