Burberry Socks
May 19, 2025Today I have my first pair of grown up socks to share. These may look great, and frankly they feel great and I am proud of them, but there are some little things that bother me. There is a tiny gap where the heel starts it's V (I understand that's common) and the heel is too small IMO. If you are a sock newbie or a sock expert, come on it and read all about it!
OK, first let's talk about these two photos above. You should have seen me lay down on the lawn sticking my feet up and swishing them this way and that while my sweet son (probably rolling his eyes but still being polite) bent down and snapped the photos. We came up with some fairly ugly configurations, trust me, but I am happy with these with the gorgeous garlic chive flowers and roses in the background.
A little about us this week. I would have posted this sooner but my husband and I are still suffering from a horrid virus that won't go away. We did go to the doctor and we know what we DON'T have--covid, flu, RSV and pneumonia, but what we do have is probably viral and definitely horrible. He is on day 13 and me day 11. I stayed in bed all day yesterday and feel minutely better today. At least we don't feel worse!
These socks! I love them. The self striping yarn is from Turtle Purl on Etsy and is called Trenchcoat, even though we all know this color configuration as Burberry. I've used this yarn before and made both a hat and wrist warmers with one skein. Now with this second skein, I weighed it and I'm certain I can make another pair of socks. I purchased the skein with a mini skein of the black for the ribbing and heel. You can purchase just the self striping yarn by itself or for a little extra you can add a mini of black or red. I'll have all the links at the end.
When I knit socks again, and I will, I will use Judy's Magic Cast on which I recently tried for another project and found it easy peasy. As for the heel, I read enough ahead of time and really tried to avoid the tiny gap/hole in the heel but it's there and I know it's there. Next time I will use the Fish Lips Kiss Heel which is said to avoid the tiny gaps and I'll let you know how that goes.
I used a combo of DPNs and 9" circulars and a forethought heel placement. I'd love to hear from any experienced sock knitters out there. What pattern do you love? What yarn do you love? What techniques do you love? Please share!
My next socks are going to be made from these fade sock sets from Shirley Brian. I See Neon Lights Whenever You Walk By and Be A Goldfish. I'll bet I can make two pairs of socks from each set. I'll let ya know! I searched for her yarn and it's entirely sold out everywhere and I don't know if she has retired or if she just sells out right away after posting. I'm hoping for the latter. If you are interested in her yarn you can get on her email list. She is from Toronto.

I won't sell your email so no need to worry about that sort of thing. I honestly wouldn't know how to do that if I did. I try to send out one post a week, usually about knitting but also about my other loves--gardening, crafts and entertaining.
