update tired Christmas decor the easy way

November 25, 2022

I'm so happy with my "new" Christmas decor! I made a few simple changes that involved a can of spray paint to bring my old pieces back to life. Last week I looked over my Christmas decorations and there was a lot I didn't like anymore. I'm not too interested in buying anything new but I did want an update. Spray paint to the rescue! Painting out-of-date Christmas decor a solid, neutral color simplifies the look and gives a more modern aesthetic. If you have some garish nativity figures or an ugly nutcracker or a sad looking deer family, why not update the look with spray paint and give a more contemporary look to traditional decor. Let's see what we can paint!

For my galvanized tin village I used Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint. This stuff is amazing and adheres to just about anything--plastic, pottery, metal, and wood and comes in a dozen gorgeous metallic finishes--coppers, bronzes, golds and silvers. Also, no need for a primer. I love the color of the Oil Rubbed Bronze--not black, not brown, but a perfect bronze.  Both my white and bronze pieces took two coats for full coverage. I paint outside in a sunny part of the yard and it takes very little time to dry between coats. They dried to touch in 30 minutes and then I brought them in the house to fully dry for 24 hours.

I took a before picture of my inexpensive cardboard and wood villages below, from Target. I think they are pretty enough, and they are certainly well made for the price, but I had an idea that I wanted a little village down my dining room table this year, so painting them white and sugaring the roofs with clear glitter unified and simplified the look and now I love them. I hope it looks as pretty on my table as it is in my mind. I used Krylon White Satin spray paint which is a great paint for a good price and also has no need for a primer.

A friend gave me one her nativities that she wasn't using.  The figures were already mostly white, but I did not like the faces or the other colored touches, so after two coats of satin white paint the set looks more sophisticated and gives a more modern look to tradition.

I'm very happy with my Christmas refresh and it only cost me two cans of spray paint. I hope I was able to give you an idea to do a refresh on your own treasures you've fallen out of love with. Maybe you have a nutcracker or a village or a family of deer that could use a facelift.  Please let me know if you try this!

All over the internet you'll see white villages and white nativities, but for more inspiration, look what's trending at Crate and Barrel and West Elm, these darling nutcrackers below in metallic finishes. I love the look but would rather not spend the money.  Spray paint to the rescue.

Today is Christmas decorating day and I'll place my new pieces around the house and I can't wait to see where they will go. I have an idea, but sometimes it will take me a few tries before I get it right.  Hubby is at golf so I've got the house to myself and have the stock simmering and the carols blasting so I don't care how long it takes. I love decorating day. When I get some good pictures I'll be sure to made another post. I have a knitting post coming up later this weekend. See you soon!

  1. You got me into the mood Kristen but it turns out where I live now spray painting is highly impractical (not enough room) so I will have to just enjoy viewing yours. I do have some white ceramic-type houses from Target from a few years ago which I might be able to “glitterize” the roofs of (to imply snow) so at least you have me thinking! (What would we do without Target). Chloe

    1. I know, what ever would we do without Target? They have upped their game and make such nice things now. They make our favorite sheets and I used to work at a high end home decor shop that sold expensive Italian sheets!

    3. We love these bottom sheets because they have double elastic at the corners and really stay on our deep mattress. They are also soft and don't pill and are easy to put on. https://www.target.com/p/300-thread-count-ultra-soft-fitted-sheet-threshold-153/-/A-13973172?preselect=54117699#lnk=sametab
