our roses 2021

May 29, 2021

Here are pictures of our roses this spring.  It was a good rose year!

Climbing Blaze below.

Carter arranged these roses for me.

Eden Climbing Rose above and below. Such a great rose.
Blooms like a champ every year, fragrant, plus the blooms stay on the bush for a long time.

Climbing First Prize above. Carter is wearing a painting smock, fyi.

Since I took these pictures, the vegetable garden has really taken off.

The roses above and below that line the fence of our vegetable garden are from David Austin.

The irises above bloom with the roses.

Red Simplicity hedge rose below.

Peonies, roses and hyacinth above and below.

I have been taking pictures of the vegetable garden and will make a post next week. We are harvesting Swiss Chard and herbs for now and making lots of pretty flower bouquets for each room of the house.

Last night we started a massive clean out of the garage. Our son has spent the night and we are going to start up again this morning after coffee and should be able to finish by late afternoon. We are going to easily fill up one very big trash bin and my son is going to try to sell the nicer items. I don't remember the last time we cleaned out the garage so it's long overdue. This is the last area in our home to get the (modified) minimalist clean and I feel so good about it. I think of myself as an enoughist rather than a minimalist. My goal was to get rid of junk and things I don't use, and to treasure and use what I have. I am finally discerning about what I bring in to my home and my closet, and if something does come in, something must go out. That has been the plan for over a year and so far, so good.

We are celebrating Memorial Day tomorrow in the USA.  It's a time to honor and pay tribute to the men and women who have sacrificed their lives for our wonderful country. Fly your flag with pride!

  1. Your garden is gorgeous as always, Kristen! A yard full of happy. I really like how the irises match the roses in dramatic color. Unfortunately I did not receive my loving grandmother's gardening gene. An occasional container of geraniums or pansies and that's about it. Enoughist. I am going to totally steal that word. And thanks for reminding me to set out my flag....There! It's been done. Chloe

    1. We had friends over last night and I made sure they took a garden walk, if no other reason than to smell the flowers. Thank you!

  8. Your garden, roses and home are beautiful. Do you ever trim your roses back? How do you keep them from getting rosette disease. I haven't had roses for 3 years because of it.

    1. Thank you, and yes, we trim them back every January. It's quite a big job and we give ourselves a full week to get it all done. We are in California and are lucky that we don't have the rose blights and diseases that other parts of the country seem to have. We have very little humidity and I think that helps prevent pests and diseases. Roses do best when we have a mild summer and they hate it when we get over 90. I do too!
