feels like raindrops

November 04, 2017

Raindrops by Tin Can Knits--loved this fun and well-written pattern that is sprinkled with yarn-over raindrops. It's knit top down and is written for fingering weight yarn. I used Flock 2nd Edition from A Verb For Keeping Warm. I LOVE THIS STUFF! I bought it at A Verb For Keeping Warm in Oakland, California where there was an entire wall of naturally dyed colors of Flock. Flock is pure joy to knit and just what you'd think a wooly yarn should be--elastic, bouncy and forgiving and all the while feeling wonderfully cottony and cushiony. It is matte in appearance and the colors are very saturated. Within each individual skein there is gentle fusion of color one expects in hand dyed yarn.  The fabric is fine and lightweight with a mellow uneven oatmeal texture. For me it is soft enough to wear next to the skin. I highly recommend Flock 2! As for needles, I went back and forth between woods and metal. I loved the way it safely held on to my wood Knit Picks needles and used them when I reached the stockinette-in-the-round part and it became my movie theater knit. When I was able to keep my eye on my knitting I loved the speediness of the Addi Lace Turbos.

They do sell Flock online, but if you'd like to visit A Verb For Keeping Warm, it is located in Oakland, just a bridge away from San Francisco. If you're like me and love visiting yarn shops when traveling, the San Francisco Bay Area is rich with them! Not far from AVFKW is Avenue Yarns in nearby Albany. Both shops are a stone's throw from Berkeley; Avenue Yarns is just north of Berkeley and AVFKW is just south; both are beautiful. There are gorgeous yarn shops in San Francisco, Imagiknit being just one.  Plus there's the beautiful Knitterly north of SF in Petaluma (on your way to the wine country) and also my own lovely lys, Uncommon Threads, an hour south of SF in Los Altos, in the heart of Silicon Valley. There are many more and a knitter's trip to the San Francisco Bay Area would not disappoint.

Here's a little more detail about Flock 2 which is the second edition of AVFKW's fingering Flock wool. The first version of Flock was made from 100% California wool, an equal blend of Cormo, Corriedage, and Targhee.  This 2nd edition was made with equal parts of Mendocino (California) Targhee and Montana Rambouillet. I imagine every edition of Flock will be slightly different with what is wonderful and available at the time. Flock is milled in Vermont and dyed in their Oakland studio making this a 100% USA product and so worthy of our support. I am a total convert of this yarn and will be purchasing more.

My favorite needles come from Knit Picks.
Knit Pick's Caspian interchangeables and straights are my #1 go-to needle.
Addi Lace needles are great for speed.

I hesitate to show you the modeled pictures below as the quality is so bad. The color is more accurate in the photos above, maybe not quite as fuchsia, but not as dull as the photos below. I share then so you can see the fit.
