Reindeer games off my needles!

Rudolph has landed—and this time, he’s landed right on my sweater! This is the first of three Christmas sweaters I’m making this year so I thought I'd better start early. Last December I wore a different handknit Christmas sweater every day, and since I finished three then, I thought I might as well knit three more… though stopping at three will be the real challenge. There are just so many patterns I love! After all, one can never have too many festive knits when December rolls around. What first attracted me to this pattern was the folk-art style of the reindeer. It has just the right mix of whimsy and nostalgia, which made the sweater simply irresistible to me.

This pattern was knit top-down in DK weight yarn and was truly easy-peasy. I did run into a little fit issue—though I was knitting the smallest size, my gauge was more 22 stitches per 4" rather than the 23 the pattern required. That one little stitch seemed to make a difference and a few inches past the sleeve separation it was clear it would be too big. So, I tinked back, skipped the underarm stitches, and the problem was solved. Knitting always gives us a way out! I added a bead to Rudolph’s nose (he’s the one flying front and center), and it gives the sweater such a playful touch. I just love this cheerful Christmas knit and can’t wait to bring it out on December 1.

Look at his little nose!

Here we go—my next Christmas sweater, Nordic Snowflake. It's so cheery and I love it! Try-on time came at this point, and I’m was happy to find that it fits. Just getting to a few inches past the sleeve separation always tells me what I need to know about the shoulders and bust, and so far everything looks good. My strategy is to knit one sleeve now, then finish the body, and finally tackle the last sleeve—it helps me avoid getting stuck on “sleeve island.” Since snapping this photo yesterday, I’ve nearly finished that first sleeve, so progress feels great!

Now on to number three: I have the pattern and yarn to make this darling Dala Horse Sweater next.
