Flamingo Sweater
September 15, 2025Hello! I don’t usually pop into your inbox on a Monday, but I didn’t want you to miss out on a time-sensitive Ravelry promotion.
Today I’m sharing a new sweater I knit as a test for Finnish designer Suvi of Suvi’s Designs. I’ve made many of her patterns, and she never disappoints—Suvi is both talented and thorough. Her instructions are clear, well-written, and easy to follow, and she takes great care to ensure a good fit. I’ve never had an issue with tricky spots like the shoulders, neckline, or overall shaping.
If you’ve been curious about lace knitting, or top down sweaters in general, I’d happily recommend this pattern as the perfect introduction.
The sweater is worked top-down, which means you can try it on as you go—making it easy to adjust along the way for a perfect fit. For the sleeves, I ran short on yarn, so I worked the turnover hems in a coordinating yarn that blended in perfectly—you’d never know unless I mentioned it. I also exaggerated the bell shape by stretching it slightly before sewing it into place, and I really like the effect.
This little trick of swapping yarns has saved me more than once. You can easily introduce a new dyelot—or even a completely different yarn—on hems, button bands, or collars. Since those areas are usually worked in a contrasting stitch pattern (like ribbing, garter, or seed), the texture shift helps disguise any color differences. I’ve even substituted an entirely different yarn before, and it worked beautifully! Since alpaca has quite a bit of stretch, I may end up taking out a lace repeat and reworking the hem to shorten it slightly. For now, I’ll wear it a couple of times and see how it settles before making the final decision.

I stopped by the local farm stand this morning and was so happy to see fall on full display. I even spotted the biggest mushrooms I’ve ever seen—those are definitely getting stuffed for dinner tonight.
Since we had steak last night to celebrate a birthday (and have some leftovers), steak and potato hash is on the menu this week too. We’ll also be having what we’re pretty sure will be our last BLTs of the season. Beyond that… well, the menu planning is still a work in progress!
