Let's make Leftover Halloween Candy Cookies

November 01, 2022

It's the day after Halloween and I'll bet you have a lot of leftover candy. I do too!  What do you usually do with the leftovers? You can nibble away at it for the next few weeks or drop it off at the office lunchroom, but the best way to use it up is to chop it up and make cookies! That's just what I did today and they are so good--chewy in the center, crunchy on the edges, and a perfect mix of chocolate, nougat and caramel. Prepare to fall in love.

This recipes starts with the classic Tollhouse Cookie Recipe. This recipe has been a family favorite for generations and I remember being so proud when I mastered this cookie at the cookie-loving age of 9. The only difference is to replace the chocolate chips with chopped chocolate candy. For this cookie I used a mixture of Snickers, Three Musketeers and Milky Way. The candy is easily and quickly chopped by hand. I double the recipe and after mixing, I roll the dough into cookie balls and put them in the freezer on parchment paper. In a few hours when the dough balls are frozen hard, I put them in labeled plastic bags where they will last for 3 months in the freezer. When baking, I defrost them for 15 minutes on the baking sheet, then bake as directed. My husband loves knowing that he can bake two or three cookies whenever he desires. I know he is a little sad when he takes out the last few and then has to wait until the next Halloween because I only make these once a year--and only if we have leftover candy. Here is the Tollhouse Cookie Recipe.

I took the following pictures when we trick or treating in our sweet little downtown yesterday with our favorite Black Panther superhero. The stores have bowls of candy for the little ones and hand out candy during school hours so the big kids won't come plowing through! The Chinese Pistache trees that flank the streets throughout our town make a big orange and red splash in autumn. I love our town.

Even superheros like Lovey hugs.

I hate to be the one to tell you to rush out and buy Christmas things early, but if you love pine forest candles during the holidays, Target has the best for less and I know from experience that they always run out early. Their Threshold brand Forest Fir candles smell just as nice as the more expensive candle from Thymes, and they are less than 1/4 the price. Target has several different candle styles in the Forest Fir scent including candles in pretty tree shaped containers, plus this diffuser. I did not see the hand wash/ lotion set at my Target, but hopefully they'll bring that back. I'll be on the lookout. The candle prices are $5-$20 depending on size. My candles were $5 each and the diffuser was $15.

  1. I think you and I bought the same bag of candy! I am staring down at a huge bowl of un-trick-or-treated Snickers etc. because I always buy more than I need. When will I learn? I love this idea of cookies and freezing the dough and if I get the energy I'll give it a try. Love that the Black Panther still needs his Lovey!

    1. I know, me too! I always buy more because I'm afraid of running out. Sometimes I will get nobody and then other years I'll get group after group. I just know that I need to have the candy gone because if the bowl is left on the counter I'll dip into it too often. Thank you for your comment.

  2. Kristen, please don't worry about sharing early Christmas ideas. You are very low key about what you recommend and I can tell that when you do recommend something you feel like it's a good value. I love Target too and always appreciate a good Target value. Elli from So. Cal.

  3. Always love those pictures from your charming downtown. We didn’t get candy this year because kids don’t trick or treat at this location. But next year will have to try! The candles are on my list! Chloe

    1. Thank you for your lovely comment! The candles are the best. Wait until you see the cute Christmas tree candles they have. I was tempted but went for the less expensive ones that are pretty too.
