Fairytale Mushrooms to Make

November 13, 2022

Are your fingers itching to do some Christmas crafting? Mine are! I found a free tutorial with a printable template for the cutest mushrooms ever. In real life these little darlings are the highly poisonous Amanita Muscaria, but we'll make these fairytale mushrooms look friendly enough to hang on a tree. Or tie to a present. Or place in a basket. OK, let's make and create.

The free picture tutorial and printable template can be found here on the Benzie site. When crafting with felt, it is best to use a high quality wool blend and Benzie has every color of the rainbow. I love their felt; it's sturdy and pliable and wooly and just the right thickness for crafting. I usually buy a color palette when I'm looking for new colors. Use the code HOLIDAYBLEND22 for 10% off through through November 14. The only changes I made in the pattern was to pen in gill lines underneath the cap, and for the stems I used my small collection of scavenged driftwood. I knew those were worth saving! I also glued on some dried moss to the driftwood stem and instead of adding the yarn loop for hanging, I poked a hole at the top, added a wee bit of glue to the hole, then screwed in a tiny eye-screw. I didn't know if I would want to hang these or not, so I wanted the hanger to be a bit invisible. At the very last I dusted glitter on the top. To do this you will need to use spray glue outside as it's just as smelly as spray paint.

I'm glad you can't see my craft room right now. It's been a very messy elves workshop for a few weeks now. These pictures don't really showcase the true chaos behind the closed door. I've been in a crafty mood for weeks and all the crafts that have been put aside for several Christmases are now getting made. I have a large glittery cardboard village to construct, another tired metal village to paint, maybe in a rubbed bronze? Very excited about that and I hope it works, but you know how you get a vision and have no idea if it's good not? That's how I feel about a lot of these things but I feel I might as well pursue them. You just never know. I also have some snowmen and pinecones to glitter and a tired nativity family to breathe new life into with white spray paint. My vision of Christmas decorations for our home this year is a little different as I think I may go with a color theme--something like red and white with metallic touches. I'm just experimenting and I really won't know if any of it will work until I start decorating the Friday after Thanksgiving. In the meantime, it's been fun and I hope you are having crafty fun too, so let me know, because I always love to know what you are making.

I was gifted a large set of barely used acrylic paints to add to my already large collection so I had to figure out a way to store them so I could actually find what I was looking for. I found a set of four plastic boxes for $10 and I was able to sort them by color and finally they are easy to find. My grandson got stars in his eyes when he spotted this shelf. And here with all these colors at my fingertips I'm still spray painting everything white. Go figure.

A few knitting posts are in the making, so stay tuned. Also, I'm very interested in making my Ebay post and a few other how-to posts and I appreciate your interest, it's just finding the right time. Obviously I put mushroom making and village glittering at the top of my to-do list. Oh me.

  2. The mushrooms are adorable. Are the houses on your shelf made from a kit or did you design them? Your craft room is way to neat for a workroom. Write a book!

    1. Aww thank you! The houses were either old tired ones, new cheapies from Target that need improvements, and some were from a kit I got years ago from Lithuania of all places! I'm hoping to do a blog post. And my room is not clean right now. I think tomorrow I'll be finished with the last of the houses and then I can give it a good clean.
