The Twist Cardigan and Brilliant Beanie

March 18, 2022

I have a new hat and sweater to show off today! It was the perfect combo for a blustery spring day. The sweater is The Twist Cardigan by Kiddiwinks Knits (pattern on sale this weekend!) and knit in DK weight yarn. The pattern is knit top down with the yoke increases hidden inside the cables so as the yoke grows the cables grow larger and puffier creating a very nice effect. I think this would be a good pattern for someone new to cables. Cables are easy to do and always elevate a sweater to "classic". I especially like the cables continuing down on either side of the button bands. I think it's the perfect back-to-school sweater. I always seem to have a half dozen on my needles in spring and try to finish them by summer. My yarn was Cascade Ultra Pima Cotton from a yarn swap. It's a very nice cotton (easy on the hands) and Carter loves the feel of his new sweater. I love it and cannot wait for the designer to create The Twist Pullover version. Stay tuned! I made the size 6/7 for my big 4 1/2 year old grandson and while it's large on him, the fit will be perfect for next fall. To determine size, use the child's chest measurement rather than age. The pattern sizes range from 3 months to 8/9 years. I'm glad I can make it again next year. My Ravelry page has yardage, etc.

The hat is the Brilliant Beanie and is a free pattern from Amy Kate Sutherland, comes in 4 sizes and uses fingering weight yarn. It's a basic pattern to use up your scraps of  sock yarn--the medium used a half skein. I used Malabrigo Sock in color Carnival. Carter loves it. Fun, small, and mindless, knit on tiny needles--something my fingers and brain needed at the time. My Ravelry page

We have Carter tonight for a sleepover and he has created the evening's menu and activities: hot dogs, cheese toast, fruit, and mixed veg which he won't touch but likes to pretend. Then we are going to our club and sit by the fire pit and have dessert, then back home to play Ghost Train (a game that can only be played in your jammies in a scary dark house).  Grammy and Papa are all in! Opening day for Little League is tomorrow but the activities have just been cancelled because of rain (but not the game we're hoping). We secretly don't mind as we are so desperate for rain here in California. It's been a dismal rainy season. Well friends, I hope you have a great weekend, and like me, are continuing prayers and support for Ukraine. Hard to believe it's still going on. So much needless suffering. xoxo Kristen

    1. Thank you, and yes, we had fun! Got in a Tball game too, between the raindrops. It was hilarious with kids running everywhere, and some even to the correct base!

    2. Is there any chance you might make a pattern for larger sized than the 12 month for your gift pattern like a size 2 or 4??

  3. Kristen - I so look forward to your Knitionary notes. With so many
unsolicited emails, this is one I treasure to read at leisure.

This sweater for Carter (and the hat!) are gorgeous. I can’t believe how
prolific you are with your knitting projects - clearly a passion, but you
are inspirational in lots of other ways too. Thank you for sharing these
posts. Carter is absolutely beautiful. I am a fairly nearby neighbor in
Santa Cruz, formerly in Carmel, CA.

I love your Ravelry page as well, by the way. I knit, sew and enjoy
jewelry-scale metal smithing as well. I love having something for my hands
to do. And give most of it away. Lots of hugs to you, and definitely
support for the folks in the Ukraine. God help them, every last one of
them. Best to you, and thank you again. Dasha

    1. Thank you so much for your lovely note. You are lucky to live in two of the nicest places in California, maybe the world! We both love Carmel and Santa Cruz, and before the roads became so crowded a half decade ago, we went on day trips often.

Thank you for your encouragement re. the blog. Sometimes I want to cast it all to the wind and then I get a lovely comment like this.

    1. Thank you! He loved the feel of the sweater, and so even if the yarn was not my absolute favorite to work with, I'll use it again as he loves it. Kristen

  5. Kristen, Just wanted to mention that I just used the Fels Naptha soap on a lipstick stain. It took it out! Funny, the Laundry Guy never mentioned that in his book.) I have bought several of your recommendations including the Gleaner (which I have not gotten to yet, but there are a couple of candidates waiting in the wings.) And have always been happy. Thank you for all of your suggestions, tutorials and tips. Chloe
