Mirage

May 01, 2018

Fern is a new 2018 spring/summer cotton from Shibui Knits. This yarn is so soft, it feels like I'm wearing a light and airy cloak of velvet. The knitting up too feels velvety and flannel-ish. The yarn is lightly brushed and is a very nice knitting experience. In other words, not at all stringy and saggy like some unfortunate cottons can be. I highly recommend this yarn, and it comes in a gorgeous color palette. This is a great addition to the knitters who love+love+love knitting with summer cotton and crave the best!

The pattern, Mirage by Shellie Anderson was a good one. I only made a change in the sleeves: instead of knitting them separately and sewing them in, I picked up stitches around the arm scythe and knit top down with short rows.  For tapering my long sleeves I made decreases every two inches to the wrist. I also finished the neck by picking up stitches and doing an i-cord bind off.

I am a bit unsure if the A-line shape and flared bottom hem suits me. This is knit in pieces, bottom up. The shaping decreases begin soon after the knitting begins to create the a-line flair. I just don't usually wear that shape and I think it will take me a little while to get used to it.

Shibui Knits Fern, I used Graphite.

The hem was designed to use Shibui Silk Cloud
but I had some stash Rowan Kidsilk Haze in Anthracite which was a good substitute.

  1. I agree with Sue. It's very flattering on you. I like the substitution you made on the hem and one of these days I will attempt to knit sleeves attached from the top down and in the round.

  2. Hi Kristen, I bought the yarn for that top and swatched the Silk Cloud, but I really didn't like the way it looked with the Fern. I think I am just going to make it straight, without the extra layer at the bottom. What do you think of that idea? I am doing the sleeveless version. Any thoughts?

    1. Hi Carol
I hope you come back here for your reply as Blogger doesn't give me a way to reply to you (grrr). OK, so I don't think the gauzy skirt adds much--very little if anything so I would very easily eliminate it. I love the sleeveless version but long sleeves or at least 3/4 are more practical for me. I cannot remember what the pattern has you do to finish off the sleeveless version, but if it looks anything like the neck, I would pick up stitches and do some kind of edging--a rib, garter, or an i-cord bind off. You'll love the yarn.
