Hello, September

September 12, 2026

Have you decorated for fall yet? Or maybe the better question is, do you decorate for fall? My hand is definitely up for yes, although I like to keep it pretty simple. If I put everything out in mid-September, it has to stay around for two and a half months, and that's a long time to look at the same things! So for me, fall decorating needs to be minimal, but still pretty enough to make the house feel like fall has arrived.

This week I've been easing into the season in other ways, too. I cut some hydrangeas to dry, cleaned and organized the freezer—and then went to Costco and messed it all up again. Such is life.

This morning I finally brought out my ages-old ceramic pumpkins from good old Target and my gorgeous orange pomegranate stems from Amazon. That's really about it for now, although things will get a little more festive as we get closer to Halloween. The week before, I'll hang my life-size plastic skeleton on the door and carve a pumpkin. Then, on November 1, the skeleton will disappear and my three little golden turkeys will come out for Thanksgiving.

And that's my kind of fall decorating: a little here, a little there, and just enough to make things feel special without turning the house upside down.

I got this little house basket from Target last week.
It's fun to get new things for the house and this holds all our desk essentials so sweetly.

I cut my hydrangeas when the petals feel leathery and their color has started to mellow. I strip the leaves from the stems and put them in a vase with about an inch of water. I've had pretty good luck drying them this way, with about a 70% success rate. A few will wilt, but most dry beautifully over the course of a few weeks.

I usually dry them indoors, out of direct sunlight, but this year I'm going to try this outdoor spot. It gets an hour or two at most of weak early-morning sun, so I think they'll be just fine. I'll let you know!

I'm using old bottles and tin cans.

Happiest dog at school this morning! Running free! Doesn't he look like he's smiling?

He also got to see his best little bud, and the two of them ran around like happy little cheetahs for a good half hour. By the time we started our walk home, Biscuit was definitely dragging. He came home, collapsed, and crashed hard.

I think he had a pretty perfect morning, but now he's in do not disturb mode.

As for knitting, the Christmas Dala sweater will be finished this weekend. I've only got the bottom hem to finish at this point. I've also got my next three projects planned! Blouse No. 5 by My Favorite Things using Lamana Como which I think is going to be so yummy, and the Edith Sweater by Le Knit using Wisconsin Woolens Worsted by Barrett Wool Co. Both are stash yarns that I purchased with no plan in mind, knowing that one day I'd find the perfect pattern for them.

This will be on my needles this weekend,

This used big needles and I'm sure will be a quick knit.

I've got one more project planned, and I've already ordered the yarn, so it should be here any day now.

Several years ago I made this folk-art doll purse from a Martin Storey pattern, and I've always loved the colorwork. This time I'm going to borrow that same pattern and adapt it to fit around the yoke of a top-down pullover. I ordered Como in Oatmeal for the body, along with black, red, and green for the colorwork—very close to the colors I used in the purse.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how this one turns out!

And if you need a few simple ideas for jazzing up your fall home, don't worry, I've got you covered!

  1. I already copied your pomegranate and magnolia leaf arrangement last year. It is difficult to comment when adds keep popping up and cover what I'm typing!

    1. Oh ugg. I'll contact the advertising people again. I want ad revenue but I also don't want them to be annoying. There has got to be a middle ground. I'll talk to them again.
