Falling around, mostly about knitting

November 03, 2024

Good morning! I woke up to an extra hour this morning, and there was light, yay, so I'll see if can finish this post that has been sitting on my desktop all week. This post is mostly about knitting, with some cooking and TV recommendations too and I hope you enjoy reading it.

First thing to share is my next project that begins with this lovely group of yarn, Brooklyn Tweed Loft and Rowan Kidsilk Haze. I'll put both strands together to make a wooly yarn with a halo to make Tursa, below. Isn't this lady simply gorgeous? The model is the designer!

This coat is swoonworthy, but all her designs are swoonworthy and if you don't already follow Natasha Hornby from Moonstruck Knits, you should! When I saw this, I knew it had to be mine. I had a little more than half of the yarn in my stash and ordered the rest. I'm hoping my colors will somewhat match hers and if it's half as pretty, I'll be happy. Before plunging in I have to sit for an hour or so and read through the pattern to understand the construction. Now with shorter days, this will be a cozy project to sink my teeth into. Can't wait.

I'm making a sweater for Carter with his favorite yarn, Rowan Softyak DK. I showed him the colors and he smiled and said he loved them.

With it I'm making a subdued version of the Bestie Hoodie, the newest pattern from Tin Can Knits. This is a really fun and easy project and great for travel, church, and meeting knitting.

This gorgeous wool has been in my stash for years waiting for the perfect cable sweater.

And I've found it! Tsubaki by Hiroko Fukatsu. I've only just started it but it has the most interesting construction and is so fun to work on. I'm moving pretty quickly with this one and it's been a great TV knit.

Here's my granddaughter Annie wearing her birthday present. If you are a long time reader you'll remember Annie as a little girl, but now she is a 24 year old graduate student! Along with her studies, she writes a disability blog where she posts weekly about understanding disabilities from a variety of perspectives, with a focus on autism. She is doing a fabulous job and she welcomes new followers. Please forward her blog to anyone you know who might be interested. Annie Kroll blog.

My granddaughter wanted an oversized bulky cardigan with daisies. I sent her pictures of a few patterns and she settled on the Campus Cardigan. It was a very nice pattern to follow and went quickly.  She also requested NO wool! I had knit with Lion Brand Hue + Me before and it's really nice for such an inexpensive yarn. I told her I may have to shorten those sleeves a bit! Recipe for the daisies is below.

For daisies I used DK weight yarn with US 5 needles, but gauge doesn't matter. Bulkier yarn=fluffier flowers, skinnier yarn=more delicate flowers. Have fun!

  • Daisy petals: (make 5)
  • CO 1 st
  • Row 1: (RS) KFB, 3 sts
  • Row 2: (WS) P3
  • Row 3: KFB, K1, KRB, 5 sts
  • Rows 4, 6, 8: P
  • Rows 5, 7: K
  • Row 9: K2tog, K1, K2tog, 3 sts
  • Row 10: P3
  • Row 11: With yarn in back, S1 and if to P, K2tog, PSSO, 1 st
  • Fasten off

  • Flower center bobble:
  • CO 1
  • Row 1: (RS) KFBFBF, 5 sts
  • Rows 2, 4, 6: (WS), P
  • Rows 3, 5: K
  • Row 7: K2togTBL, K1, K2tog, 3 sts
  • Row 8: P3 tog, 1 st
  • Fasten off. Turn ws together and tie ends together to make bobble.

This is what our kitchen table looks like right now. We are going to vote this afternoon then take our ballots to our local drop off. We already know how we're voting except for some local issues which will take a bit of reading and research, that's what all the above is for. Last week our pastor had a fabulous sermon about acceptance, and how we can apply acceptance to this upcoming election. Here is the link to the sermon, and it starts at mark 38. I think you'll like it. Bonus, our hymn was Let It Be!

Must watch this month: Martha, a documentary on Netflix. I heard she was not happy with this documentary. Maybe she didn't like the way she was portrayed, but I really admire her. Other somewhat recent docs I loved was Pamela Anderson, Pamela, A Love Story. She was someone I knew zero about, but admire her so much now. I also know nothing about soccer, but fell in love with David Beckham after watching his documentary. All three are on Netflix. On Apple, watch Steve Martin. He's complicated but adorable. And when you are watching it, in one scene he's in the kitchen making poached eggs with a funny little gadget. The eggs were cooked to perfection. I immediately went online to find it and we love it! As much as I like to avoid buying kitchen gadgets, this sous vide cooker is something I love so much, I now give it out as gifts. It's genius! Our little grandson loves perfectly poached eggs and this was a must have. It also makes great egg bites and hard or soft boiled eggs.

Remember my October Challenge from a few years ago? I loved it so much that I now do it every year, except this year I started on November 1. I think I can go 2 to 3 weeks by making meals with what I already have in the pantry and freezer. Last nights dinner was an amazing soup. I had a bag of dried beans in the pantry, some leftover meatballs in the fridge, a frozen ham hock, and I always seem to have carrots, onion and celery. And just like that, a lovely soup was created! Read all about the challenge here. It's great to do any time of the year, but right before the holidays is my favorite time. File this under frugal living!

In my next post I'll update you on my eBay and FaceBook Marketplace experience. I hope you have a good week, and I'll see you soon. And as always, thank you for stopping by!

  1. Thanks so much for sharing such a variety of recommendations! I’m getting ready to knit the Artus Shawl by Moonstruck Knits that has the same pattern as your cardigan!

    1. Hi Sharon! I saw the Artus Shawl and everyone says they loved knitting it so it should be fun, plus it's gorgeous, so there's that! I just this morning plopped another knitting project into my queue so don't know when I'll ever get this done. Luckily we have a quiet November so hoping to knit A LOT!

    1. Thank you! Well, she says she loves it so I hope so. You never know when you make a gift for someone, right? And there's no returning it to the store!

  3. Long been a fan of Natasja’s. For me her patterns are quite daunting but I am working up to them. Glad to see Annie looking so happy. Another backstory of a frivolous appearing person is Paris Hilton’s. She endured a horrific two Years as a teenager at a tough love camp.. Will definitely watch Martha. Thanks for the heads up! 1. I agree about the daunting part! I have not made one of her patterns yet, but everyone seems to think they are very well written and doable, so fingers crossed! As for Paris Hilton, again, another pop celebrity I know nothing about but still would love to watch her doc. Is it call This Is Paris? While googling her I came across another doc about those wilderness camps for kids. I actually think I remember one of my friends sent their kid to one. I don't remember who or if I'm imagining it--it was years ago. I don't know if those types of camps exist anymore.

  4. Re Paris Hilton, I read her memoir but did not see the documentary ((although I would like to). I think they are finally gone, those camps. She has testified befor Congress about Them. Chloe

    1. I watched it last night and again am blown away by these supposedly vacuous celebs who actually do have a brain. She is a good gal who has a lot of baggage and hope she has found happiness. Her parents were desperate to save her from constant clubbing and partying when she was in high school. It had to have been a nightmare for them and probably didn't know what else to do. I just downloaded her audiobook.
