Hyphen Pullover

One of my favorite children's wear designers, Lisa Chemery of Frogginette, has just released a new pattern—and I was invited to test knit it! The Hyphen Pullover is her latest design, and like all of her patterns, it stands out for its exceptional fit. Lisa pays close attention to the details that matter most for children's comfort. The neck opening is designed to be wide enough to easily slip over little heads without looking sloppy, and she incorporates German short rows at the back neck for added ease and a better fit—helping the sweater stay put and not ride up.




This is a top-down design with a beautifully textured yoke, knit in DK weight yarn. The pattern includes sizes from newborn up to 10 years, and I made the largest size for my brand new 8-year-old. He's tall, so I added about an inch to both the body and sleeves for a better fit.

I used Rowan Calmer (sadly discontinued a decade ago, but I’ve still got a wee stash), and I’m so happy with how soft it is. He’s very picky about yarn, and Calmer is completely itch-free. He asked for a black sweater, and I’m so glad I had this deep charcoal in my stash. Highly recommend this pattern if you’re knitting for little ones!

In the top picture, you can see the tonal stripes I added when I ran out of yarn—I used a true black to add length with a few stripes and finished the ribbing in it as well. It was a way to make my yarn stretch, but I actually really like how it turned out!

    Beautiful child and sweater. I can't believe how grownup he looks. I remember him when he was a baby. Has it been 8 years ago already?

    Great sweater. Carter is the only grandchild I know of who has his very own label on his sweaters.
