Woodland Elves

November 19, 2013

Today I have a fun and fast pattern to make little elves from spools and snippets of yarn.  I inherited my great Aunt Cytha's sewing box where dozens of wooden spools were stashed.  I knew I would find a use for them one day.   I already had wood beads in different sizes but you can use walnuts, hazelnuts or little lumps of clay for the head.  You can use any aran or worsted weight yarn but I loved using the Lion Brand Wool Ease.  A few little red beads for the noses and some wool roving for the beard and that's everything you'll need.  A whole village can be made in an evening and think this would be a fun project for older children.  I know my Christmas mantel this year will have an elf invasion!

Enjoy!

  3. ooh! I love your little elves! you can find a photo here of a similar guy I created last winter http://webloomhere.blogspot.com/2012/12/magical-books-for-gloomy-days.html you cannot see it in the photo, but I used a wooden spool for his body and knit up a little grey tube to cover the spool (but of course, all my nice knitting is hidden by the lush beard on my elf/gnome!)

  4. I cannot, cannot, CANNOT tell you just how much I love these little dudes!!!!!!!!!! They are cute as they can be!!!! I am going to FORCE my sister to make me some! She is a knitter (always has those needles clicking unless she has her head buried in her I-pad!), and I think she should definitely rise to the occasion and make me a couple of dozen! :-) SO cute!!!!!!!!! Have a great weekend and a wonderful Thanksgiving week!
