I just can't tell you how much I love this sweater! Flax Light is a free pattern from Tin Can Knits and is sized from newborn to 4XL. It's so fun and easy to make too. I had some Madelyn Tosh Unicorn Tails meant for a shawl, then a scarf for me, but I really didn't like the way either was turning out so the yarn became a fade for a baby sweater. The colors faded together to make a simply gorgeous color story. My Ravelry page says I started this last April, but I was in no hurry because I was making the 2-4 year size and my grandson was not even a year old. But he is a big boy and now at 18 months I realized he could just about fit into it with the sleeves rolled up so I pulled it out and finished it. It's lightweight and will be nice through spring and perhaps fit next year as well. The super quick photo shoot was extremely wiggly, and when he'd had enough, he let me know!

You are a wonder, Kristen! Although I confess I have to concentrate my attention to see your beautiful projects, because your grandson is just so darn cute, it's a distraction!

DeleteI am in awe of your knitting and continue to be with each you show us. The sweater is so precious and since I am going to be a grandma for the first time, in August, I need to take notes on all of the sweaters you knit. Question: does the yarn fade on it's own or are those all separate skeins and you have to start a new one with each change? Thank you. I love reading your blog.

DeleteAs for the fade, these are individual mini-mini skeins—I think I had about 20 different colors with about 20 yards each I think. Mostly blues and greens, but also quite a bit of browns and grays with a dash of purple. I gathered up all my spare Unicorn Tails and placed them in an order that was pleasing, going from color to color. I knit until I was a little bit more than two-thirds way through the color. Then at the next BOR, added the next color and knit with each color, alternating every other row until color #1 was done. Knit with color #2 until about two-thirds finished and added color #3. Continued as above.
I did the sleeves last. I took my remaining yarns and weighed each piece then divided each one in half. This way I was able to get matching (ish) sleeves.

DeleteThank you! And yes, I do machine wash Mad Tosh Unicorn Tails: I always turn the machine washable sweaters inside out and put them in a mesh bag and wash them on the gentle cycle. I do notice that they last longer and look better if I hand wash, so when I have my grandson's sweaters in my possession, I will hand wash them. I do notice that the kids, busy as they are, do not use a mesh bag when washing, etc.; such is life!
